Welcome. As you may have noticed, binrev.net has become CryptIRC. The following document should answer the most common questions about the new network name and policies.
Why has binrev.net become CryptIRC?
Essentially, the binrev.net name has outlived its usefulness; we want to create an IRC network with, among other things, a wider scope than just discussion related to Binary Revolution. Changing the name to CryptIRC will allow us to attract a more diverse array of channels and users, as well as allowing us to shift our focus towards creating an IRC network with unparalleled privacy and anonymity. To this end, we've implemented some cool new features which we think you'll like.
What new features does CryptIRC offer?
CryptIRC now has full hostmasking for all users, whether they choose to connect via SSL or not. In addition, all communication between CryptIRC servers is encrypted. We feel this offers you better security and allows you to be as anonymous as you choose to be without having to rely on an ever-changing and unreliable set of IRC proxies.
Will I have to do anything differently to use the new network?
You should point your IRC client at irc.cryptirc.net; the old binrev.net addresses will continue to work for now, but they will likely stop working at some point in the future.
Will I have to do anything differently with regard to network services?
No. All services data has been carried over from binrev.net; your nickserv and chanserv registrations and settings are still in place.
Are there any new channels I should check out?
- #cryptirc is the new official general chat channel of the CryptIRC network.
- #phreak is a new channel for chat about phone phreaking.
Will #binrev go away?
Not at all. CryptIRC will remain the official home of the #binrev IRC channel. Since CryptIRC is no longer a Binary Revolution project, and since there is now a new general chat channel, #binrev now has the opportunity to re-focus on all things related to Binary Revolution.
Have there been any changes to network staff?
No. CryptIRC is staffed by the same fine folks who have been dutifully staffing binrev.net
Where can I go for help?
There are several resources available to you:
- You may visit the CryptIRC Policy Document Center at http://policy.cryptirc.net/, where you will find detailed, easy-to-understand policies for the CryptIRC network as well as any channels which have filed their own official set of channel policies.
- You may visit the official CryptIRC help channel, #help, where you may ask CryptIRC staff for assistance with using the network.
We are pleased to have the best users on IRC, and we appreciate your continued use of CryptIRC. Please tell your friends about our network, and invite them to bring their channels here. As always, the staff is here to help you, so please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
